We are all aware of those clever people who create the anecdotes that make us all think that business is easy. Well the truth is, it's not. So we've asked our friends, colleagues, staff and suppliers to contribute their own anecdotes.

If you have any relevant tips please send them on to us. It's fun and it might actually help somebody.

Angry emails

You've just received one of those completely unreasonable emails that makes you so angry you want to respond immediately venting your spleen to satisfy your blood lust!

I have now learnt never to respond straight away to an email that makes me cross. I'll leave it, often to the following day, by which time I've had a chance to calm down and think about an appropriate response. Always the most prudent course of action.

Do your own measuring

Well, hey! it's a lot easier using the dimensions I've just received from this other company. It'll save me time and I wont have to buy a train ticket to another wet, cold and grimy part of the UK to take my own measurements.

Over the years I have learnt that dimensions from 'other' sources should never be trusted. Always, always, always go and conduct your own survey. Then when it goes wrong you know who to blame.

Sleep on it

How am I going to solve this one? I don’t know what to do, but I have to do something to resolve the situation.

Whenever a complex or tricky situation arises I have learnt to sleep on it. The following day the problem has sometimes solved itself, a resolution comes to mind or simply the problem doesn't seem so bad. Time is a great friend (apart from the growing old bit that is).

Smile

This is a tricky situation. They're not going to like what I have to tell them and I don't think they add any value to my business anyway.

Being tough in business is sometimes necessary but it's not personal, it's just business. So smile and give bad news gracefully as it's better to be respected for your stance on a matter than disliked for being unpleasant.

It's not how much you do, it's what you do

Oh God I feel like I have to stay in the office till late as I'll be thought of as a shirker if I leave now, but it's dark, I'm tired and I want to go home.

So true this one! Being in the office 12 hours a day might seem impressive but if you're on Facebook or playing solitaire it helps neither you nor your business. So all those managers who think that being in the office for hours is the key, you're wrong. Be the first to go home as tomorrow you might really need your energy!

Don't worry about the competition

That's it I've lost another job to that company. I must be doing something wrong. I suppose I should copy their way of doing business.

Now the truth is we all have to keep an eye on our competitors, but remember they are also watching you, probably more closely than you think.

So do what you believe is right and don't feel the need to copy others. Go your own way. Then if you succeed you know who to thank and if you fail you know who to blame.

It's never as bad as you think it's going to be

The car's not working, it's raining and I have no umbrella! What's the point?!?

My mother used to say that 'things are never as bad as you think they're going to be'.

She was right! (I hope).
